I regularly oil our wooden spoons, cutting boards, chopsticks, knife handles, pepper grinder and other wood kitchen things. I make a batch of this spoon oil every few years, the method (slightly adapted from a 3191 Miles Apart quarterly) is simple:
- 1/4 pound of beeswax
- 16 oz bottle of mineral oil
Melt them together in a double boiler – usually I do this in a glass jar left over from something else (like pickles or olives), with jar lid(s) scattered across the bottom of the main water filled pan to keep the glass jar up off of the bottom of the pan. If you have smaller jars, you can heat the oil and wax separately, and then combine them.
Once everything is melted to combine, pour it into your jar(s) and start using it. It makes a lot, I usually give some as gifts to friends.
